Chanukah in Israel – A New Chapter

As we celebrate Chanukah this year in Israel, the significance of the holiday feels more profound than ever before. The streets of Israel today echo with the footsteps of the modern-day Maccabees—men and women who, like their ancient ancestors, rise to confront unimaginable challenges, all while holding fast to their Jewish values.

The original story of Chanukah is one of resistance against an oppressive regime, led by the Antiochus IV, who sought to extinguish Jewish identity, faith, and tradition. In the face of tyranny, the Maccabees—a small, dedicated group of Jewish warriors—rebelled, and against all odds, they won! Their victory is a symbol of Jewish resilience and unwavering commitment to our values. What’s often overlooked, however, is that the miracle of the oil, the central miracle of Chanukah, only occurred after the military victory was achieved. This teaches us an important lesson: while we must act and do everything in our power to fight for what is just, only then does Hashem step in as our partner.

This year, we see that Israel is once again facing profound challenges. The modern-day Maccabees walk among us—soldiers, citizens, and leaders who have risen to the occasion, defending our homeland from those who seek to destroy us. Their courage and sense of purpose mirror the original Maccabees, who understood that defending our values and our way of life is not only a physical battle but a spiritual one as well. In the face of terror, Israel has demonstrated once again that we will not bow to injustice or cruelty.

Chanukah is a time of hope, reminding us that after we do all we can to fight for what is right, Hashem will provide the rest. The miracle of the oil lasted for eight days, symbolizing that when we act, Hashem will partner with us. This year, as we celebrate the festival of lights, let us reflect on the light we carry as a nation—the light of resilience, faith, and Torah.

As we light the menorah, let us remember the modern-day Maccabees who walk among us, and let us pray that our actions, guided by our values, will continue to bring us the ultimate light of miracles, both in our personal lives and as a nation. May the lights of Chanukah illuminate our path, and may Hashem’s presence continue to guide and protect our nation.

Student Reflection

Renee Franco - Brooklyn, NY - Hillel Yeshiva, NJ

It’s crazy to think we have almost reached the halfway point of this year! MTC has been such an amazing experience, and I can’t imagine being anywhere else.

Every day I get to learn from the most caring staff of MTC and the amazing people of Bet Elazraki. The relationships formed from the beginning of the year between teachers, friends, and the kids of Bet Elazraki have been beyond incredible.

The kids are truly the highlight of my days. Seeing their faces light up and them running towards me for a hug fills me with so much warmth and forces the biggest smile onto my face.

Recently, in one of my classes I learnt about igniting the light within ourselves and then sharing that light to those around us. This idea has been so relevant for me since coming to MTC, and now even more so with Channukah approaching.

The other day I was walking with a few of my girls to the park, and their excitement and energy ignited the light within myself and gave me that same spirit! We spent our time at the park laughing and spreading our light to each other, creating such warmth and happiness. Whether we are doing an activity, going shopping, or just hanging out together the girls have taught me a powerful idea of being that brightness within ourselves while also spreading it to others.

I am so lucky to be part of MTC, where we are constantly surrounded by this brightness and sharing it with everyone around us!

Wishing everyone a meaningful Shabbat and Happy Channukah!
